WHERE IN METRO MANILA: Yummy good things at RUB Ribs & BBQ

BY PAUL MICHAEL CAMANIA JARAMILLO

It's a Sunday afternoon when ate Mel invited me and Badette to have our lunch at RUB Ribs & BBQ. It's an unplanned day!

RUB Ribs & BBQ is familiarly American in nature, with posters of famous Hollywood artists and 70s memorabilia.

RUB Restaurant in Makati has about 50 seating capacity, which often gets occupied during peak hours. It’s best if you come early at the restaurant because if it’s at peak lunch hours, you’ll find it hard to find an available table.

We got Raki's BBQ Ribs Singles (P220), served with 1 side of your choice (Texas Toast, Grilled Buttered Corn, Garlic Spinach and Mushrooms, Roasted Garlic Mash Potato, Bacon and Potato Salad, Coleslaw, Buttered Vegetables and Sprice or Spiced Fried Rice).

The Raki's BBQ Ribs Super Duo (P390), served with 2 sides, is good for a couple. For a family of 4, RUB has a Family Brunch (P720), served with 4 ribs and 3 sides.

WHERE IN METRO MANILA: Create your own sizzlin' meal at Sizzlin' Pepper Steak

BY PAUL MICHAEL CAMANIA JARAMILLO

After a tiring day and enjoying our snow experience and laser blaster game in Star City, we looked for a good restaurant in Harbour Square, near CCP Comples (where the Star City sits).

We tried Sizzlin' Pepper Steak, a Japanese-inspired casual dining restaurant.

The Sizzlin' Pepper Steak lets you prepare your favorite steaks, burgers, chicken and seafood on sizzling plates.

Take your pick - steak (burger - P179, chicken - P209, rib-eye - P549, tenderloin - P589, salmon - P379) or strips (beef - P209, beef tapa - P189, pork - P209, pork BBQ - P209). Next, add your sauce (teriyaki, white cream, gravy, Sizzlin' Steak). Then, choose your rice (pepper +P10, kimchi +P60, plain, garlic, curry +P30) or veggies +P10. You may add extra sides like pasta (P40), mashed potatoes (P20), bacon (P40), and egg (P20).

The Sizzlin' Pepper Steak offers ready-to-eat dishes. Their best seller dishes are Beef Pepper Rice (P199), Oyako Pepper Rice (P219), and Salmon Pepper Rice (P350).

I tried Beef Sizzlin' Pasta (P229). I have to admit - it's my first time to see a noodles in a hot plate. The Sizzlin’ Pepper Steak pasta has been re-imagined with peppered noodles. It is loaded with sizzling hot, thinly sliced beef marinated in a special yakiniku sauce with fresh linguine pasta. I must say - their sizzlin' pasta is now in my favorites list!

The Sizzlin' Pepper Steak is a unique concept that delightfully offers sizzling steaks on the patented hot plate system that prepares and serves delicious steaks within 5 minutes. The hot plate is an integral part of the formula of the restaurant, which aims to serve expediently fast and keep food hot for 20 long minutes.

Included in their Sizzlin' Sets menu are Burger Steak Set (P190), Salmon Steak Set (P420), and Minute Steak Set (P619).

For desserts, they have Turtle Cheesecake (P196), New York Cheesecake (P176), Blueberry Ice Cream (P89), Banana Dark Chocolate Ice Cream (P89), and Vanilla Cookie Butter Ice Cream (P99).

I also ordered Mango Shake (P70).

The Sizzlin’ Pepper Steak is at Alphaland Southgate Mall, BF Homes, Glorietta 5, Harbour Square, Festival Mall, Newport Mall, Eastwood City, Robinsons Galleria, SM Fairview, SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM North Annex, TriNoma Mall, Venice Piazza, Ayala Center Cebu, and Robinsons Summit Ridge Tagaytay.

WHERE IN METRO MANILA: Fast food or fast good? Chef Lau's Pugon Roasters serves firebrick oven-roasted traditional Pinoy dishes

BY PAUL MICHAEL CAMANIA JARAMILLO

July 27, 2015 - 101st anniversary of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ). My R.G. Manabat & Co. (KPMG in the Philippines) batchmates in the audit group decided to go out to lunch to celebrate God's 101 years of blessings to the Church.

We looked for a good restaurant in Ayala Triangle Walkways in Makati. We decided to try Chef Lau's Pugon Roasters, a restaurant that serves firebrick oven-roasted traditional Pinoy dishes like roast chicken, pork liempo, beef, and other great stuff at a very affordable price made special by one of the best chefs in the country.

Chef Lau worked in many local fine dining restaurants as well as restaurants in France, Australia and New York. He was one of the judges and hosts in the highly popular and successful "Master Chef” international T.V. franchise cooking show series here in the Philippines.

Kier, Alexa and Jessica tried Pugon Roast Chicken (P99/P119), signature 1/4 chicken. Bel and I ordered Smokey Chicken BBQ (P99/P119), while Vico and Hya tried Sizzling Chicken Sisig (P99/P119).

Other value-for-money chicken specialties are Chef Lau's Crispy Chicken Croquettas (P89/P109), a 5-piece big crunchy, cheesy chicken chunks; aand crispy fried 1/4 chicken in rich adobo sauce (P99/P119).

Dishes roasted in charcoal fire brick oven are Baked Bangus Belly (P139/P159), Pork Binagoongan Roast (P159/P179), and Sizzling Angus Roast Beef (P189/P209).

Have a sisig fest with Pork Liempo (P129/P149) and Pork Liempo (P149/P169).

For merienda, you may try Sinampalukang Chicken Sopas (P25), Pancit Lukban (P79/P99), and Kaldereta Mac (P89/P109).

Desserts are being offered at an affordable price - Halo Halo Sundae (P89), Maja Blanca (P55) and Carabao's Milk Ice Cream (cone - P39/sundae - P59).

Other branches are Venice Piazza, McKinley Hill Taguig and SM SUN Residences, Welcome Rotonda, Quezon City.

The restaurant is open Mondays to Saturdays at 7AM - 11PM and Sundays at 7AM - 10PM.
