WHERE IN METRO MANILA: Marvin Agustin's brand Sumosam

Thanks to my friend kuya Warlito for this treat since I passed the CPA board exams last May.

SumoSam takes great pride in the transformation of the freshest ingredients into works of Japanese food art. Now, it has flourished into one of the largest Japanese chain Restaurants in the Philippines with close to 30 restaurants nationwide. SumoSam was brought about by its founders’ many travels across the globe and passion towards the art of Japanese cuisine.

Pinoy celebrity Marvin Agustin is now the chief of a growing restaurant empire. With partners Ricky Laudico and Raymund Magdaluyo, Marvin has now opened nearly 50 restaurants nationwide encompassing 11 brands—SumoSam, Kung Fu Kitchen, Tokyo Grill, John & Yoko, Mr. Kurosawa, Johnny Chow, Marciano’s, Komrad, Robotosan, Gambino and his latest, the buffet restaurant Banzai.

Going back to the topic, SumoSam's Tempura is made with only the largest, freshest Tiger prawns. It has a light and lacy coating using the perfectly-mixed batter, kept at an ice-cold temperature. 

Some of the recommended dishes are  Assorted Sushi (P428), a nigirzhushi of salmon, tuna, ika, kani, tamago, uni, tako, and ebi. Served with wasabi and lemon; and Tonkotsu Ramen (P358), broth cooked slowly for 48 hours. Choice of either Shoyu, Miso or Shio soup base.

Included in the Tempura Menu are Mixed Tempura (P298), Ebi, Kisu, Kani, Dory, Sweet Potato, Eggplant and Okra; Vegetable Kakiage (P288), a variety of thinly sliced vegetables with Ebi and Ika; and Assorted Vegetable Tempura (P178), Shitake, Green Bell Pepper, Sweet Potato, Eggplant, Okra, Onion and Carrots.

A bowl (P529) of U.S. Wagyu Rice or U.S. Wagyu Bacon Rice is good for 3 persons. 

At P298-P308, you can have your Hamubagu - Shinjuku (Wafu steak with Japanese gravy), Tsukiji (Wafu with wasabi cream), Marunouchi (Wafu katsu curry), Roppongi (Wafu with mushroom gravy), and Ueno (Wafu curry).

Do you love Anime Burgers (P298)? Try Mazinger Z (Chili and jalapeños) and Daimos California (Kani and onion rings).

An Ala Carte (P399) has Beef Misono, Mixed Tempura, Tonkatsu/Torikatsu, Chicken Teriyaki served with Tofu Miso Soup and Iced Tea. Group Bento (P1,596) is a combination of Mixed Tempura, Torikatsu/Tonkatsu, Beef Misono and Chicken Teriyaki served with 4 Miso Soup, 4 Gohan and 4 Bottomless Iced Tea comes with Yasai Itame and Sashimi.

A radical visionary leader, he has led organizations of the Supreme Student Government, Science Club, Youth for Environment in Schools Organization, Interact Club, Math Club, Philippine National Red Cross and other organizations in their institution. He was also awarded as a distinguished student leader as a former officer of the Supreme Student Government and received President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Campus Journalism Award. He attended two National Leadership Training for the Student Government Officers, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Youth for Environment Summer Camp, Science Leaders Congress and Schools Press Conference. Joined and won in the several contests from their school to the national level.

He is an organist and an officer of the Church of Christ (Iglesia Ni Cristo).
