WHERE IN METRO MANILA: The authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice from Singapore is in Wee Nam Kee Philippines

BY PAUL MICHAEL CAMANIA JARAMILLO

Singapore restaurant chain Wee Nam Kee, which has become synonymous to its signature Hainanese Chicken Rice, is reopening in the Philippines after its shutter by the Bureau of Internal Revenue for allegedly understating its sales. But don't mind the issue. Let's talk about its best dishes.

After a worship service with my friends ate Wengz and Krizzalyn, we decided to have our lunch at TriNoMa. We couldn't decide were to eat. We agreed to look for a restaurant that serves Asian cuisine since that's our favorite. But we did not choose Japanese, Chinese or Korean restaurants anymore. We looked for Vietnamese and Singaporean restaurants. Finally, we found this famous Singapore restaurant chain.

Wee Nam Kee has been known for its Hainanese dishes, especially its flavourful chicken rice and tender chicken meat pieces. While Wee Nam Kee is known for its steamed Hainanese chicken, the Wok-Fried Chicken with Cashews and Sun-Dried Chili (P270) is a great new chicken dish to try.

What to order?

For appetizers, order the Prawn Paste Chicken Wings (P218), with the prawn paste in the batter giving that umami kick to these delectable wings, while the Prawn Rolls in Beancurd Skin (P218) has minced prawn stuffing and wrapped with the much overlooked ingredient beancurd skin that's fried to crisp. Crispy Mantou Bread with Condensed Milk (P78) and Pork Spring Roll Bouquet (P168) are also available.

For a quick snack or those looking for a more interactive meal, the Stewed Pork Belly with Steamed Buns (P365) is a great choice. You may also want to try Salted Egg Pork Ribs (P330), Sweet Marmite Pork Ribs (P285), Cashew Coffee Spareribs (P298), and Tofu Roasted Pork with Black Beans (P275).

Interesting rice toppings to try is their Salted Egg Chinese-Style Fried Chicken (P295) with the salted egg in the batter giving the dish a pleasing richness and an almost velvety mouthfeel.

The Tamarind Lemongrass Fish Fillet Stew (P325) had sweet-sour-salty notes that seemed really good paired with plain rice. Seafood Menu also includes Hainanese Curry Fish Fillet  (P325), 5-piece Prawns with Lychee and Peaches (P495), 5-piece Warm Prawns in Spring Salad (P495), Steamed Pacific Dory with Minced Garlic (P280), Butterflied Tilapia with Citrus Tamarind Sauce (P385), Claypot Fish Fillet with Beancurd and Black Beans (P280).

Pair those delightful entrees with plain rice, their famous chicken rice, or perhaps try their new Pineapple Fried Rice (P250), which is sweet with an added bit of saltiness from the pork floss; or Sambal Fried Rice (P225), Minced Crab Meat Fried Rice (P240).

Noodle lovers will find some exciting choices with dishes big enough for sharing like the Shredded Chicken Crispy Noodles (P315), Almond Fish Noodle Soup (P328), or the Hainanese Chicken Curry Noodles, the restaurant's version of the laksa.

Wee Nam Kee now has eight branches in the Philippines: Ayala Triangle Gardens, Serendra, Glorietta 2, Alabang Town Center, Promenade Greenhills, Trinoma mall, Shangri-La East Wing, and in the new Fairview Terraces mall.
