Benhur Luy files list broadcast journalists

Journalists also received cash gifts from alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles according to accounting entries in the files of principal whistle-blower Benhur Luy.

According to a report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI), a list of Luy's accounting entries showed several prominent journalists and media personalities were given cash gifts from Napoles.
The report said these news personalities received the following amounts anytime between 2004 and 2008:

  • Korina Sanchez of ABS-CBN, P50,000
  • Mike Enriquez of GMA, P50,000
  • Deo Macalma of DZRH, P715,000
  • Ray Pacheco, P715,000
  • Luchi Cruz-Valdes of TV5, and formerly of the Probe Team and ABS-CBN
  • Unnamed TV and radio personality, P2 million
  • Erwin Tulfo of TV5, P245,535
  • Carmelo del Prado Magdurulang, P245,535
  • Bon Vivar, P10,000

Several of the journalists and media personalities identified have issued statements to deny the allegations.
Enriquez said in an interview that was aired on GMA News TV’s Balitanghali:
Magkahalong galit at lungkot [ang nararamdaman ko.] Hindi totoo yun. Bakit gagawin ito sa isang katulad ko, na wala namang ginagawa? Isa lang akong anchorman, isang mamamahayag lang na walang ginagawa.
Enriquez also questioned the authenticity of Luy's list, saying it was unsigned.
Alam kong di yun totoo, [dahil] walang pirma. Sabi nila nasa file daw, pero walang pirma. Pag walang pirma [ang affidavit,] madaling magdagdag o magbawas. Pwede ako magsulat sa kahit anong napkin tapos sabihin kong listahan yun.
In a statement from Enriquez published by the Inquirer, the veteran newscaster said he abides by GMA’s strict code of ethics.
In a statement released Sunday afternoon, GMA Network said it does not have any reason to doubt Enriquez's statements.
Mr. Enriquez has always adhered to the high level of professionalism required by GMA and it stands by him in the face of these baseless charges.

The PDI report said a certain Mon Arroyo, a former television director, would act as a conduit for the media personalities. Arroyo allegedly received almost P500 million, as did the media consultant of senator Vicente Sotto III, Jen Corpuz, who is alleged to have received P1,180,000.

Arroyo on Saturday sent the Inquirer a sworn statement in which he vehemently denied being involved in any media payoffs by Napoles, either for himself, Sanchez, Enriquez or any journalist.

I am writing this affidavit after I learned that a story is being written by one Nancy Carvajal implicating my name to an alleged solicitation of funds from Ms Janet Lim-Napoles allegedly to buy gifts for media people.

In a statement published on, Valdes denied any knowledge of the supposed “representation expense” allegedly disbursed to Mon Arroyo on her behalf. She said that in the period cited (2004-2008), she was no longer a part of the Probe Team. Valdes also chastised the Inquirer for the “reckless inclusion” of her name in the Luy list, which, she said, is “largely hearsay” and has no legal basis.

Sanchez, the wife of Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, also denied receiving any money from Arroyo. She said she only met Napoles in 2013 when she was assigned to do an interview with her. "I am dismayed that an unsubstantiated lie such as this should be given as much attention. Because how do you prove a negative?" asked the ABS-CBN news anchor.

The Inquirer is not naming the prominent TV and radio host who collected more than P2 million from officials of the National Agribusiness Corp. (Nabcor), the state-owned agency that was used as a vehicle in the scam to divert congressional pork barrel funds to the ghost projects of the bogus Napoles NGOs and subsequently to the pockets of Napoles and her lawmaker accomplices, as two former Nabcor officials, who have applied to become state witnesses, have yet to provide documentary evidence.

The TV personality hosts an early morning show and cohosts a late afternoon radio public affairs program, both of which air on weekdays.
