PROFILE: Miss Universe Philippines 2014 Mary Jean Lastimosa

Bb. 25 Mary Jean Lastimosa is the new Miss Universe Philippines titleholder.

Lastimosa, a 26-year-old beauty from North Cotabato, was crowned Binibining Pilipinas Universe 2014 at the annual beauty pageant's grand coronation night held at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, March 30.

During the highly anticipated but dreaded question and answer portion, reigining Miss Universe Gabriela Isler asked the Davao-based entrepreneur:

"What is the greatest advantage of being a woman?”
The greatest advantage of being a woman is being able to compose ourselves. Just like here, we’re standing in front of thousands of people not knowing if they're cheer for us. But we try to compose ourselves, we keep the emotions and show the beauty that is in us. And tonight, thousands of people are here, celebrating the beauty of a woman.

The pressure is on Lastimosa as she tries to equal or surpass the recent good standing of the Philippines in the Miss Universe competition: Maria Venus Raj was fourth runner-up in 2010, Shamcey Supsup was third runner-up in 2011, and Janine Tugonon was first-runner up in 2012.   In 2013, Ariella Arida was named third runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant, with Venezuela's Isler taking the crown.

Lastimosa is an entrepreneur who has established a slimming center in Davao.

She joined in the Binibining Pilipinas 2011 and won the second runner-up title, placing behind Shamcey Supsup, Dianne Necio, Isabelle Manjon and Janine Tugonon. She competed again in 2012 and was among the 12 semi-finalists.

Lastimosa is an actress and a computer engineer. She was the Class Salutatorian in elementary and graduated with honors in high school.

She joined Mutya ng North Cotabato and placed first runner-up; Davao's Loveliest, first runner-up; and Miss National PRISAA, second runner-up. She won Mutya ng Tulunan 2003,  Lakambini ng UM 2004, Mutya ng UM 2006, Miss Regional PRISAA 2007, Mutya ng Davao 2008, and Reyna ng Aliwan 2008.

Lastimosa represented the Philippines at Miss ASEAN 2012 in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand and placed as Top 10.

After her stint at the Binibining Pilipinas 2012 pageant, Lastimosa traveled to Brazil to gain further experience in modeling and beauty pageants.

After her victory, Lastimosa said that she never really expected to win.

“It was surreal. When they called my number, I was like, 'Am I really going to wear the crown?' Because I never imagined that I would. But when it happened, it was like a dream come true.”

Lastimosa admitted that she wasn’t really into pageants when she was younger.

“The first time, Davao City just convinced me to represent them, to just try it. I never trusted myself so I was hesitant to join. I joined the pageant because the whole city was supporting me. And then when I won second runner-up, I got addicted to it. I was like maybe I should try because I think I can do it. And then failure came. I was like no more pageants for me. But then acceptance would just come in and you just move on with life and do what you wanted to do.”

Lastimosa took one last chance when Binibining Pilipinas adjusted the age limit for the pageant.

“When I was in the States, my friends were texting me to join. I was like no, that's it for me. But when I came here, the people in the pageant wanted to meet with me. They convinced me that maybe I can do it. I was like okay, because I don't have anything to do naman. Thank God I did it.”

Now that she will represent the country in this year’s Miss Universe competition, is she pressured to continue the Philippines' winning streak in the pageant?

“I don't know. I'm still trying to suck in the idea that I won. Pressure will always be there no matter what the performance of the past winners would be. I think I just trust BPCI that they will give us the right training that we need.”

Last year, Arida who is an Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) member placed third runner-up in the international competition.

Lastimosa is also a proud INC member. Her name is registered in the Locale of Ugong, Metro Manila East.

Aside from Lastimosa, other INC members are making waves in the different fields. Atty. Nielson G. Pangan topped the 2013 Bar Exam. Kristine Joie Azarcon Danan and Engr. Emmanuel S. Gabriel also topped the NLE and ECE respectively.

With the church celebrating its 100th founding anniversary, will Bb. Pilipinas bring home the Miss Universe crown?

Prince William, Kate release new photo with baby Prince George

An official photograph of Prince George with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has been released ahead of their tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Kensington Palace released a new family photograph of the royals on Saturday, March 29, featuring the beautiful 8-month-old with his parents Prince William and Kate Middleton. The couple's cocker spaniel, Lupo also makes a special appearance in the delightful photo.

The baby boy, who is third in line to the throne, has only made two public outings since his birth -- the first time as he left hospital, and then at his christening in October.

In the image, taken by royal christening photographer Jason Bell, the family is looking through an open window at their Kensington Palace home.

George, who was born on July 22, 2013, will be a similar age to William when he made his first trip Down Under with his parents, Prince Charles and the late Diana, in 1983.

The Cambridges are due to arrive in New Zealand on April 7.

The royals will be accompanied on their 18-day trip next month by their new Spanish nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, who trained at the famous Norland College for childminders in Bath, western England.

Michael Cinco (via video) to Kris Tiffany Janson
If you could go back int time what would you change and why?
I would go to my father and tell him how much I love him because I know that it was something I took for granted. But tonight, I do not worry because I know he has the best seat, and he is watching from above. And tonight, I am a step closer from achieving his dream.

Ms. Precious Lara Quigaman-Alcaraz to Kenneth Santiago
Name one thing you would sacrifice for a Bb. Crown.

It is an advantage because you have this beauty, this ability to inspire people.

Korina Sanchez to Parul Shah
As a binibini you must be updated on events, what particular current event affects you the most and why?
I'll have to say it's [the news] about the Malaysia Airlines [flight] that went down. My sincere love and compassion goes out to all the families who lost their love ones. All I can say is that we shouldn't lose faith in God.

Entering their names in the Guinness World Records are the 24-strong cast composed of Larry Macapanpan, Owen Mabaga, Robbie Dell Macatbag, John Ray Mappala, Sandy Cenal, Abraham Compuesto III, Evan Lazana, Carlo Ferdinand Vasquez, Helino Francisco Jr., Kerr Bangeles, Harold Lomtong, Luis Jay Volante, Santos Tominio, Justo Quita Jr., Hazel Foja, Robert Clark Bear, Paul Michael dela Peña, Adin Rome Santos, Renell Montecillo, Jopet Quiro, lady baller Maricar Convencido and American participants Tony Tatar, Chuck Williams and Jeffrey Moore.

Organizer and Asian Cable Enterprises Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Ruby said the biggest achievement was being able to generate funds for the victims of the typhoon.

Cherie Gil walks out of 'Ikaw Lamang' set

Veteran actress Cherie Gil walked out of the set of the ABS-CBN soap "Ikaw Lamang," Dreamscape publicity head Eric John Salut confirmed on Thursday.

On his Twitter and Facebook accounts, Salut said Gil wanted to leave the set of "Ikaw Lamang" at 10 p.m. to attend a send-off party even though she was supposed to shoot her scenes until 2 a.m.

"To set the record straight: Cherie Gil is supposed shoot her scenes till 2AM (the usual cut off) but she wanted to leave at 10PM to attend a send off party. Siyempre, hindi siya pinayagan ng production kasi hindi siya nagpaalam ahead of time.

"She was permitted to a 2-week leave for her musical play. The day she walked out of the taping was the day she resumed taping for Ikaw Lamang. Why blame the production? Why blame the writers? This is not fair! Teka lang ha."

Gil, for her part, complained about the alleged lack of work ethic in TV soaps. On Friday afternoon, Gil also accused Salut of "completely [twisting] the truth," adding she will no longer speak on the matter.

"Work ethics? Why can't it exist in the world of soaps? Sadly it doesn't. There must be a better way."

In "Ikaw Lamang," Gil plays the role of Miranda, mother of Franco (Jake Cuenca).

"Ikaw Lamang" stars Coco Martin, Kim Chiu, Julia Montes and Cuenca. It airs weeknights after "Dyesebel" as part of ABS-CBN's primetime block
