Vilma Santos wins Best Actress for ‘Ekstra’ at Dhaka International Film Festival

 
 
Batangas Governor Vilma Santos bagged the Best Actress award at the Dhaka International Film Festival held in Bangladesh for her performance in the acclaimed indie film “Ekstra.”
 
Twenty-two films from Asia Pacific including Australia competed at the film festival.
 
Iran, which had four entries, dominated the Dhaka International Film Festival, receiving six top awards including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Children Film.

Counting her 2003 Best Actress win at the Cinemanila International Film Festival for “Dekada ‘70”, this is Santos' second international acting award.
 
Santos' first indie film also won for her the Best Actress honors at the recently concluded 12th Gawad Tanglaw awards and in last year’s Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival where it was entered in the Director’s Showcase category.
 
Established in 1992, the Dhaka film festival is a biennial event is considered as one of the most prestigious film events in Bangladesh where it focuses on “introducing mainstream global cinema to local film makers as well as to promote healthy cine culture within the country”.
 
In the Dhaka film festival, “Esktra” was entered in the Australasian Film Competition section where it was up against 21 other entries from Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, India, Iran, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Turkey. It is the lone feature film entry from the Philippines.
 
Directed by Jeffrey Jeturian, “Ekstra” tells the story of a struggling bit player in television soap operas. It was among the entries to last year's Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival where Santos was also named best actress.
