Alyssa Asilo died due to leukemia April 6, weeks before the University of the Philippines Los Banos was able to confirm her degree. But the school decided to give her a posthumous diploma, which Asilo’s parents received during graduation rites.

9. Japan allows multiple-entry visa for Pinoys

Pinoy travel bugs almost leaped for joy in June when rumors swirled that Japan is lifting its visa requirements for Filipinos. That turned out to be an exaggeration, however, as Japan only allowed multiple-entry visas for Philippine passport holders.

8. Osang Fostanes wows 'The X Factor Israel' judges

Forty-six year old Pinay caregiver Rose "Osang" Fostanes in the reality talent show 'X Factor Israel' has made it to the show's Top 12. Osang chose to sing Shirley Bassey's "This Is My Life" during her audition.
7. Aldrich Lloyd Talonding gets an invitation from Ellen Degeneres

Aldrich Lloyd and his cousin James Walter Bucong, gained popularity online through the video-sharing site YouTube.   Ellen Degeneres invited the 14-year-old kid from the Philippines to be a guest on her show after she watched the kid’s moving performance of “Dance with My Father” on Youtube. 

6. UP student tagged as ‘photo thief’

Mark Joseph Solis, a graduate student of the University of the Philippines, admitted in September that he submitted another photo as his own to win an contest sponsored by the Chilean Embassy. It was also later revealed that it was not the first time Solis plagiarized a photo.

5. Bye Pilipinas, hello Filipinas?

An online debate was sparked late June when a proposal changing the country’s name to “Filipinas” from “Pilipinas” surfaced. The resolution by the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino claimed the move will “promote the country’s official and modern name which reflects its history and development as a nation.”

4. Pinoy graduates with honors from U.S. Air Force Academy

One Filipino cadet wowed netizens by graduating with honors from the U.S. Air Force Academy. Theodore Karl Quijano, who hails from Diplog City, was part of his class’ Superintendent’s List, which signifies academic, military and athletic distinctions.

3. Hero dog ‘Kabang’ comes home

The dog that made headlines when she saved two girls about to be hit by a motorcycle again took the spotlight in June. She came home from the U.S. after a successful operation which closed her wounds.

2. Cop cries during SONA protests

Not all the police officers controlling protesters during President Benigno Aquino III’s State of the Nation Address in July liked what they were doing. One of them broke into tears when confronted by an activist, and photos of the so-called “crying cop” made rounds online.
