Should Christians celebrate Halloween?

Halloween is celebrated by millions of people as a fun time for kids, putting on costumes, and going door-to-door to get candy. But it is also known as a time of witches, ghouls, goblins, and ghosts.

There are discussions on whether or not we should participate in Halloween.

HOW DID HALLOWEEN START?

The word Halloween is derived from the term "All Hallows Eve" which occurred on Oct. 31, the end of summer in Northwestern Europe. "All Saints Day," or "All Hallows Day" was the next Day, Nov. 1st. Therefore, Halloween is the eve of All Saints Day.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain.

Halloween itself originated in paganism.

According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Halloween was thought to be the most favorable time for divinations concerning marriage, luck, health, and death. It was the only day on which the help of the devil was invoked for such purposes.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A PERSON PASSES AWAY?

Many think that man is a physical being only.

This verse from the Bible clearly establish the fact that man is a triune being composed of spirit, soul, and body:

I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

The body is the entire material or physical structure of a human being -- it is the physical part of a person.

Genesis 2:7 states that Man was created as a "living soul." The soul consists of the mind (which includes the conscience), the will and the emotions.

Where does the soul go after death? Does the soul sleep and remain with the body until the final resurrection on the Last Day?

At death, the soul does not leave the body; both soul and body sleep until the Day of Christ’s return. The soul has no consciousness as it sleeps; it is aware of nothing.

Soul and spirit are not the same.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 states "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."

NO PURGATORY

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Purgatory is “a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.” To summarize, in Catholic theology, Purgatory is a place that a Christian’s soul goes to after death to be cleansed of the sins that had not been fully satisfied during life. Is this doctrine of Purgatory in agreement with the Bible? Absolutely not.

The world will become as it was in the beginning and no discord will be felt. All of God’s children, who are chosen to join with the angels and saints, will live a perfect existence.

Once the Heavens and Earth become one, there will be no Purgatory. The only path souls will take, who will not be saved, will be the one which leads to Hell.
