Surprising things that make you smell bad

You always knew you were slightly funky after a hard glass of liquor or a spicy dinner. But, turns out there are tons of other things beyond the obvious, that make you smell like a rotten meat. Like the amount of carbs you eat, or whether you only use deodorants, can also affect your body odour, breath and more. So, if you didn't know this already, then, dear guys, you're in for a surprise.  Here's a list of lesser-known causes of the BIG BAD BO!

1) Tongue Plaque

It's no secret that brushing and flossing can keep teeth clean. But, what most people don't realize is that the back of the tongue is a ripe surface for harbouring plaque and bacteria. When plaque gets thick enough, the bacteria releases volatile sulphur compounds. This condition produces the type of bad breath that you can't simply brush away. Brushing, flossing and especially using a tongue scraper can help keep bad breath at bay, as will drinking plenty of water.

2) Low Carb Diets

Followers of protein-packed diets may find their breath surprisingly stinky. Ditching carbs to fit into your favourite pair of jeans might be the way to go, but it may also take toll on your breath. This is because carbohydrates are the natural energy source for your body. When you start consuming lesser carbs, the body uses fat stores for energy, which often releases substances called ketones in your bloodstream. They make your breath smelly. You should consume at least 130 grams of carbs daily to stay healthy.

3) Prescription Meds

We know that you know that prescription drugs have side-effects. But, they're not exclusively of the headache or tummy-ache variety. Some of them might make you smell. Some drugs, like anti-depressants can control how much you sweat. The more you sweat; chances are that more bacteria, which cause body odour. Additionally, drugs against allergies and high blood pressure can give bad breath as they have the tendency to dry out the mouth, and saliva helps in keeping the mouth clean and hydrated. Surprising, isn't it?

4) Using Only deodorants

Deodorants only temporarily mask your body odour; they don't prevent our bodies to release sweat.  What you really need is an antiperspirant, which actually clogs sweat glands thus preventing your body from excessive sweating. Stay a notch ahead in the game by picking a product which has both deodorant and antiperspirant. If you're a big time sweater, apply antiperspirant at night before going to sleep and after shower, before heading out in the morning.

5) Eating Too Much Meat

You smell like what you eat. While most common body odour is caused by the normal presence of bacteria on our skin metabolizing the sugars and proteins in our sweat, some of our favourite foods may be the culprit behind odour as well. You smell like what you eat. This also includes eating too much meat. Hence, it is always advisable to have a balanced diet so that body odour issues never come up in the first place.
