Mysterious Luna art, zombie apocalypse to mark Semana ti Ar-Aria Festival 2013



Short horror films thrill Semana ti Ar-aria 2013

An emerging hub for creative media arts, Ilocos Norte once again hold the second Ar-Aria Short Horror Film Competition this October as highlight to the province’s premier Halloween event, Semana ti Ar-Aria Festival.

It is open to all students from high school and college levels believing that fresher ideas and more creative approach would come from these groups. A team with a maximum of ten members including the production crew and main cast is allowed to send only one film entry of six to ten minutes.

A special screening for all the entries took place on October 25, 2013 which was followed by the announcement of winners.

Second Place - "Sagawsaw" (Ilocolaya Film Productions/ MMSU and Divine Word College of Laoag)


Third Place - "Hele" (University of Northern Philippines-Vigan City) 


BEST DIRECTOR - John Jeric Cabuyaban (Panumbalik)

Zombie-infested run dominates downtown Laoag

Streets of Laoag City were opened for a wave of zombie attacks as Ilocos Norte Semana ti Ar-Aria resurrected one of its most exciting highlights, Taray Ar-Aria (Zombie Race) on October 26.

Aiming to bring a more exciting Halloween for Ilocanos as well as visitors, Taray Ar-Aria brings a thrilling twist of challenging participants to experience zombie apocalypse as they run against time, their co-runners and ultimately some hordes of flesh-eating living dead.

Initiated by the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, this year’s Semana ti Ar-Aria Festival kicked off on October 23 by a historical awareness activity that unveils the mysteries surrounding some of the most celebrated artworks of Filipino global artist, Juan Luna.

Titled Zerrudo Files after its speaker Associate Professor Eric Zerrudo, the event commenced at Juan Luna Shrine, Badoc, Ilocos Norte.

Complementing the said event is a major exhibit for Juan Luna Day on October 24.

October 23 Wednesday
PROF. ERIC ZERUDO FILES: A scholar’s account of mysterious events surrounding Luna’s art
A renowned Philippine museum curator, Zerudo will enliven historical artefacts as he reveals the mysteries behind the celebrated works of the first global Filipino artist, Juan Luna. 

October 23-25
FDCP SINE NG MASA
 The mobile cinema by the Film Development Council of the Philippines returns to the Province to feature home-grown films and provide free entertainment to Ilocano communities. 

October 24 Thursday
JUAN LUNA DAY 
Known as the man who brought the Filipino artistry to global consciousness, Juan Luna’s life and works are immortalized thru a major exhibit and other various activities. 

October 25 Friday
AR-ARIA FOOD STRIP OPENING (will run until November 2)
Visit this food fair and experience Ilocano culinary heritage located near the Capitol grounds, Laoag City.

October 26 Saturday
CAPITOL'S HALLOWEEN TRICK OR TREAT
Shaping a positive Halloween experience, children are given the chance to dress up as their favourite ‘horrific’ characters and search Capitol offices for surprise freebies. 

SECOND AR-ARIA SHORT HORROR FILM FESTIVAL/Film Screening
Join us for the screening of the annual short horror film festival of the province and witness our budding Ilocano filmmakers showcase their warped and imaginative entries.

TARAY AR-ARIA (Zombie Night Run)
Tagged as the most awaited highlight of the Ghost Week, this year’s zombiefied course, Taray Ar-Aria, will be resurrected to give you the most thrilling entertainment for Halloween. 

October 27 Sunday
DRIVE-IN FILM SHOWING, Marcos Stadium/Sirib Mile
Let your cars roll in to the Marcos Stadium as it will become the very first drive-in movie theatre in Ilocos Norte. 

October 31 Thursday
PARADA ILOCA-LOCANA
Witness all characters in your nightmares come alive as the third year of the Parada Iloca-Locana (Ghost Parade) hits the Laoag City downtown. 

BLACK PARTY
A discotheque of shadows is ready to noise up the night with exciting events and rock music at Laoag City’s University Belt.

November 1 Friday
TUMBA FESTIVAL
A ‘feast of the dead’ that fuses sentimentalism and artistry, this distinct Paoay tradition showcases Ilocanos’ reverence for their deceased loved ones.

Cuntapay to revisit Ilocos Norte’s Semana ti Ar-Aria

The original queen of Philippine horror films, Lilia Cuntapay is back to join fellow Ilocanos for the biggest Halloween event in Ilocos Norte, the Semana ti Ar-Aria Festival.

Cuntapay which graced the same event last year has agreed to make a comeback particularly to lead ghost-costumed paraders during the Halloween fest’s Parada Iloca-locana (Ghost Parade) on October 31.

Cuntapay is popularly known for years of playing the role of a ghost or an ‘aswang’ in various local films. Recently, she turned into a promising celebrity after her first-ever starring role in the feature-length indie mockumentary, “Six Degrees of Separation From Lilia Cuntapay” won her a Best Actress award—her first ever after toiling for decades in the entertainment industry.
