La Salle beats UST, wins UAAP title

De La Salle University came back to stun University of Santo Tomas in overtime, 71-69, in Game 3 and capture the coveted men’s basketball crown in the UAAP Season 76 Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

After trailing the Tigers in the first two quarters, the Archers mounted a comeback in the second half and forced overtime tied at 65.

Almond Vosotros drained a jumper from the corner to make it 70-69 for La Salle. LA Revilla gave the Archers a 71-69 breather by splitting his free throws with 9.1 seconds left.

UST still had the chance to steal the game, but Karim Abdul missed on his final heave, allowing La Salle to escape with the title.

Finals MVP Jeron Teng fired 25 points, hauled down 8 rebounds and issued 6 assists while Vosotros and Jason Perkins added 16 and 13 markers, respectively, for La Salle.

Meanwhile, Karim Abdul and Jeric Teng combined for 50 points and 14 rebounds but no other UST player finished in double figures.

The Tigers won Game 1, 73-72, but the Archers retaliated with a 77-70 victory in Game 2 to force the do-or-die game.

The last time La Salle won the title was when it swept University of the East in the 2007 finals.

La Salle locked up its eighth men’s basketball title overall.
