Angel Locsin will once again return as Darna after Star Cinema announced that she was chosen to play the role of Mars Ravelo's iconic superhero in an upcoming movie adaptation.
The 29-year-old actress is, of course, no stranger to playing the Ravelo superheroine. In 2005, she sky-rocketed to stardom when she starred in a “Darna” TV series that aired for almost eight months on GMA, her original TV network.
Award-winning director Erik Matti will helm the project, Locsin said.
Locsin said the yet untitled Darna movie is one of the biggest projects ever done by the film company.
Naku, you have no idea kung gaano kalaki! Kasi kahit ako, nagulat, eh. Hindi niyo (Star Cinema) 'yan sa akin sinasabi. Sabi ko, 'Sandali lang, ha. Ganito pala kalaki ito?' As in, never ako naka-experience ng ganito kalaking project, o nakarinig man lang.
First time ito. First time ito sa buong history ng Pilipinas.
Matti’s production outfit, Reality Entertainment, will co-produce the film set for release in 2015. Star Cinema and Reality Entertainment also co-produced Matti’s last film, the acclaimed action thriller “On The Job”
Locsin referred to Star Cinema's vision for the film as "daring," citing the people involved behind the camera. The rest of the cast cannot be divulged at this time, the actress added.
Ang tapang! Ang tapang ng Star Cinema para gawin itong project na 'to. And ako, bilang napili nilang artista dito, sobrang...
Locsin expressed confidence that the film will elevate standards in local filmmaking, saying it is something Filipinos can be proud of on the global stage.
Pero dito ngayon, all in talaga. Ibibigay namin sa inyo ang lahat.
Citing the scale of the project, Locsin said she already considers it the highlight of her career. She even said, in jest, that she would have no regrets if it happens to be her last film.
Wala, wala na akong mahihiling pagkatapos nito. Parang ano kasi... Sobrang -- pasensya na kayo, ha! Nalulula kasi talaga ako. Sobrang laki niya. Ang laki niya talaga. Right now, sobrang kontento na ako sa nangyayari at sobra-sobra pa nga ang nangyayari.
Star Cinema managing director Malou Santos said it is Star Cinema’s goal to showcase special effects to offer something new to the viewers.
“Sa ngayon, I think the best production outfit na may ganung kapasidad is Reality. That is why we have a partnership with them. In fact, when we bought the Mars Ravelo stories, gusto namin isa-pelikula ang Darna kung sino si Darna sa panahon ngayon. Definitely, the effects will be different from the past Darna movies.”
Since it became popular in Ravelo’s komiks novels from the late 1940s, the role of Darna has been portrayed by several actresses — including Vilma Santos, Sharon Cuneta, Nanette Medved, Anjanette Abayari — in movies and on TV. Even the late comedy king, Dolphy, played a gay Darna in 1979′s “Darna Kuno”.
The most recent TV incarnation of Darna is actress Marian Rivera, who appeared in a 2009 series by GMA-7.
The name is an anagram for Narda, the name of a young mortal lady who turns into a superheroine when she swallows a magical stone.
The new Darna costume was revealed by Noel Layon Flores.
