WORLD RECORD | Tallest Plastic Brick Structure

PRESS RELEASE FROM

Like the Tower of Babel reaching ever higher, the world record for the tallest structure built with interlocking plastic bricks has spent years growing incrementally.

Since the first record tower was built in 1998, taller versions have been assembled by individuals, by groups, and even by the LEGO company. Successful attempts have happened in nine different countries, from Estonia to Norway.

And now, the record has found its way to the Red Clay Consolidated School District in the U.S. state of Delaware.

Tapping into the manpower of a 16,000-student school district, Red Clay topped out its structure at a skyscraping 34.43 m (112 ft 11.75 in). The organization used more than 420,000 individual LEGO bricks to assemble its tower.

Smaller portions of the tower were constructed across the 32 schools in the district. Bricks were donated by local families and corporate sponsors, with the total weight of the bricks clocking in at over a ton. Then, with all the sections coming together in the city of Wilmington, construction crews assembled them into one, sending the tower upward.

Red Clay superintendent Dr. Merv Daughtery placed the final brick at the top of the tower, which bested the previous record-holding structure by nearly 2 m (nearly 6.5 ft).

After the tower’s construction, plans call for it to be dismantled with the bricks being redistributed to various district schools for their own uses.

“This has been a great community event," Dr. Daugherty said. "It shows what people can accomplish when they pull together. One kid could have never done this by themselves, but when we all work together as a team we can do something that people thought impossible."

Janet Napoles memes

Below are some of the memes going viral after fugitive businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles’ surrender:

A photo of Napoles on her yacht with President Benigno Aquino III surfaced on the Internet.

On fictional news broadcast BV Patrol, mug shots of Napoles were shown—on mugs.

One meme showed Napoles as a contestant who will sing on “The Voice of the Philippines”. The judges were Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, and Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago.

Memes of Napoles after surgery with pig’s ears and a snout also spread.

Another meme showed photos of Arroyo and Corona in wheelchairs, along with a photo of Miss Piggy. “Birds of the same feather end in the same chair,” said the caption.

However, others chastised the administration, saying Napoles’ surrender was scripted.

Meanwhile, one netizen created a comic panel out of a photo released by Malacanang, entitled "Meanwhile at the Palace".

Here are the other photoshopped photos being passed around Facebook and Twitter:

Sumuko na din si Napoles! But I hope she doesn't get any special treatment. Balita ko eto daw holding cell niya. Tweeted by @RealEduManzano

Sen. Miriam cracks pick-up lines to rip senators

In her speech before the Philippine Psychiatric Association on Tuesday, January 21, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago used her signature humor to rip her colleagues.

Ang gara-gara nila, pasikat. 'Pag bukas ng bibig nila, wrong grammar lumalabas.”

“To be a lawmaker now means to get your pork barrel, and never attend session. Or if you attend session, member ng committee on silence!”

“Change the name. Don't call it the Senate of the Philippines. Just call it Acute Psychiatric Ward.”

“Is it true there’s a measles outbreak? If there's an outbreak, please tell the measles patients to go take a walk at the Senate.”

“This is a nation of kleptocrats. What do you say, mental health specialists? Why are we so fond of electing kleptocrats? What is their sex appeal?”

Santiago also questioned the timing of the supposed bombshells of Revilla and Estrada accusing the administration of influencing the Corona impeachment trial.

She, Senator Bongbong Marcos, and former Senator Joker Arroyo were the only ones out of 23 senators who voted to acquit Corona in May 2012.

Despite Malacañang’s denials of bribery, Santiago said it is “a relevant question of law” to ask why the 3 senators who voted for acquittal were not given additional funds sourced from the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP).

Budget Secretary Florencio Abad had admitted giving senators P50 million each months after the Corona trial but denied the money was a bribe.

Tatlo kami: ako, si Senator Joker Arroyo, Senator Bongbong Marcos. Wala kami ni piso. ‘Di kami sinabihan meron palang ganoon. Is it my deodorant or what? Tapos sasabihin nilang walang bribery? Isn't your intelligence insulted by that kind of reasoning?”

Santiago also used some pick-up lines for her statement on the event of the Philippine Blood Coordinating Council.
The brain of the Filipino politician has two sides, the left has nothing right in it, the right side has nothing left in it.
Holduper: Holdup ito, Akin na pera mo.
Cong: Hindi mo ba ako kilala, isa akong congressman.

Santiago also delivered the following lines at the start of her speech at the National Student Conference on Hotel and Restaurant Management, drawing laughter from the audience:

3. How to tell if a politician is telling the truth:
Whenever he’s crossing his arms, he may be telling the truth.
Whenever he’s stoking his chin, he might be telling the truth.
Whenever he looks at you straight in the eyes, he might be telling the truth.
But when he opens his mouth, he is lying.

4. There was a study on the connection between government employees and the sport they play.
The study then made this conclusion, kapag tumataas ang posisyon mo sa gobyerno, lumiliit ang balls mo.

Sabi ng isa: Electricians – everything inside them is color-coded.
Sabi ng pangalawang doctor: Librarians – everything inside them is in alphabetical order.
Sabi ng pangatlo, pulitiko ang pinakamadali: They have no brains. They have no guts. They have no hearts. And they have no balls.

And last and the most prolific of all these liars, Number 1: Pulitiko. That’s the end of the story.

As one of the Top 12 candidates, Lising was asked: "Among the five senses, what do you prefer to have if you could only have one? And why?"

She responded: "Thank you for that wonderful question. If I have to pick out of five sense, I would pick seeing. Because seeing is the best sense that we can ever see, because seeing is believing. And believing into what you see is perfect. And, uh, out of all those senses, seeing... would really be wonderful, because… Thank you. That will be it."

Janet Napoles surrenders to President Aquino

Secretary to the Cabinet Jose Rene Almendras talked with fugitive businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles, husband Jimmy and lawyer Atty. Lorna Kapunan at the President’s Hall Receiving Area of the Malacañan Palace to yield herself to President Benigno S. Aquino III

Janet Lim Napoles at 9:08 pm Wednesday, August 28, surrendered to Malacañang officials who met her at the Heritage Park, a cemetery in Taguig City, just hours after Malacañang set a P10-million bounty for any information leading to her arrest.

"Janet Napoles surrendered to President Aquino. Napoles is wanted on charges of serious illegal detention arising from the alleged kidnapping of Benhur Luy," Malacanang said in a statement.

President Aquino later turned over Napoles to Interior Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas and "Philippine National Police Director-General Alan Purisima but he decided to join them in Camp Crame, where the President himself checked where Napoles would be detained.

Presidential Security Group (PSG) applies strict security clearance to fugitive businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles, husband Jimmy and lawyer Atty. Lorna Kapunan upon arrival at the Malacañan Palace

In
Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda's own chronology presented to the media Thursday, August 29, he said everything began with him seeing a crawler (news brief) on ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, on Wednesday at 12:37 pm.

10:48 am: President Aquino announces P10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Janet Napoles

12:37 pm: Lacierda calls Napoles’ lawyer Attorney Lorna Kapunan after seeing a crawler on the ABS-CBN News Channel quoting Kapunan that her client is willing to surrender.

Lacierda tells Kapunan: “So what do you want? So you want to surrender? And she said at that point: 'We would like to surrender. If at all, let me confirm with my client that we would like to surrender to the President.' Why the President? 'Because [he’s] the person that we trust.'"

Around 2 pm: After the Gawad Apolinario Mabini awarding rite at the Palace, Lacierda sees President Aquino to inform him of the development. Aquino tells Lacierda, “Ang dami nating leads. there were leads of this and that. So this is just another lead. ‘Pag bumalik na siya, let me know.”

4:06 pm: Kapunan calls back and said her client was willing to surrender and that her only request was that her safety be secured. By that time, President Aquino had already talked to Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas about Napoles’ possible surrender.

Lacierda says Aquino instructed Roxas to turn over Napoles to the Philippine National Police after her surrender.

Lacierda and Kapunan exchange calls where they would be meeting.

“In my sense, she was not in direct contact with Ms. Napoles, so she was talking through a conduit. So we were going back and forth on where to meet, where to meet,” Lacierda narrated.

Roxas makes security preparations for Napoles in coordination with Chief PNP Alan Purisima.

Kapunan tells Lacierda to meet her in the vicinity of Pasong Tamo.

6:50 pm: Lacierda leaves the Palace to have dinner together with Usec. Abigail Valte and Usec. Manolo Quezon. Kapunan calls Lacierda and tells him to meet her at White Space, an events venue in Pasong Tamo, Makati.

Kapunan arrives in a vehicle with Jimmy Napoles, husband of Janet. The two board Lacierda’s vehicle.

“When they boarded, I asked them: ‘Where are we going?” And sinabi ni Mr. Jimmy Napoles… was: “Let’s go to Heritage Park.”

Lacierda informs the President of the developments.

8:06 pm: The three arrive at Heritage Park where they stay until 9:08 p.m. During that time, Mr. Napoles keeps calling and texting someone on the phone.

9:08 pm:  Two women arrive – one of whom is Mrs. Napoles. Lacierda says the second woman was an assistant who was carrying Mrs. Napoles’ things.

The group then go back to Malacañang.

9:37 pm: The group arrives in Malacañang where they undergo security checks. Mrs. Napoles also undergoes a medical checkup.

Mrs. Napoles talks to President Aquino, Philippine National Police chief Alan Purisima, Executive Secretary Jojo Ochoa, Secretary Rene Almendras, Secretary Mar Roxas, Secretary Ramon Carandang, Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte and Undersecretary Manolo Quezon for about 10 minutes. Kapunan thanks President Aquino for receiving Napoles.

Napoles' move raised several speculations such as the surrender being a "scripted" plan to surface her, as claimed by Kabataan Partylist Rep. Terry Ridon.

FACEBOOK SCAM | Angelina Jolie Dies at 38

A viral post claiming that actress Angelina Jolie was pronounced dead on August 23, 2013 "after her second major operation" is rapidly spamming itself across Facebook via a rogue app that tricks users into granting it access to their account.

Angeline is alive and heavily involved in humanitarian work, primarily helping child refuges in Damascus.

Entertainment news website Zeibiz.com said that a Facebook page called RIP Angelina Jolie was created on Thursday with the same claim.

Two months ago, it was Jolie's aunt, Debbie Martin, who died of breast cancer, the ailment that Angelina avoided, leading to her surgery.

If the post shows up on your timeline, delete it immediately. Do not click on any links, and most importantly do not grant the app access to your profile info or allow it to post on your behalf.

ACT Now: Beat the pork, expose corruption

The news over the ill use of some lawmaker’s Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), better known as ‘pork barrel’, has swept the social media causing outrage among Filipino people calling for the abolition of the pork barrel system and for ending the culture of graft, corruption and patronage politics.

The PDAF is a regular allocation of public funds to the members of the Congress. It allocates P200 million a year for each senator and P70 million for each member of the House of Representatives.

Recently, the nation has been dazed by the pork barrel scam involving several politicians and a greedy businesswoman, Janet Lim-Napoles.

The government has been defrauded of some P10 billion over the past 10 years, having been diverted to Napoles, who owns 28 houses, 30 cars and 400 bank accounts, participating members of Congress and other government officials.

On August 26, one million new heroes who want the pork barrel scrapped will assemble at the Luneta Park.

“Kayo ang boss ko,” President Aquino told the Filipino people during his inaugural speech. Now, his bosses are asking him to abolish the pork barrel system.

Alarmed by the public outrage, PNoy announced that he is abolishing the special congressional allocation to halt misuses by congressmen and senators.

What Pnoy said was the abolition of the PDAF. He did not say the pork barrel system would be abolished. Definitely, the funds will no longer be called PDAF but it would remain as congressional allocations. Under the new system, it will carry another name but it is still the publics’ money at the discretion of politicians.

CUPIT, NACAW, CORAF, HOLDAF | Netizens suggest names for new pork system

The Aquino government, who promised a ‘tuwid na daan’, is now defending the pork barrel.

In the center of a public debate over the pork barrel, this is nothing new. History repeats itself. Our country is influenced by corrupt leaders.

How can we have wealthy Enriles, Estradas, Revillas, Ampatuans, Angaras, Ejercitos, Farinases, Singsons, Villafuertes, and people who often suffer poverty and hunger?

The pork barrel system has deprived Filipinos of their rights to social services. Each of the 94 million Filipinos owed P57,063. Our government's outstanding debt is P5.364 trillion. Millions of Filipinos who, according to a recent survey, went hungry in the last three months. Imagine what pork barrel can fund if it is used properly. We lack truthful and capable leaders who spend it prudently and wisely.

These are funds that should be used for schools, hospitals, jobs and projects. Taxes paid by the people are for the people and it is not for the support of the high lifestyle of politicians.

In a culture of corruption, we need to ACT now – promote accountability, credibility and transparency - by enabling the people to hold the government and to account the use of public resources. I strongly support the Freedom of Information. The money that our representatives are using is not for them. This is about the money of the people but the government destroys this freedom.

We call on the Aquino administration to abolish the pork barrel system and audit all the branches of the government. This is a system that keeps poverty prevalent. We call the Filipino to take action against this series of corruption and abuse.

Photo from Inquirer

Nanatili itong isang panaginip.
