'Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir' to re-introduce Calungsod to moviegoers

Rocco Nacino has been selected to replace JM de Guzman as Pedro Calungsod in a Metropolitan Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry about the life of the second Filipino to become saint.

“Yes, Rocco Nacino is now confirmed to portray the much-coveted role of San Pedro Calungsod in ‘San Pedro Calungsod, Batang Martir’,” Mell Navarro reported on his Facebook account.

The director added that he had other actors in mind – Paulo Avelino, Alden Richards and Coco Martin.  But Rocco topped the list because he looks like the young saint and has played Calungsod in a GMA News TV historical docu-drama.

De Guzman's father had earlier withdrawn the participation of the actor in the film, citing "health problems."

The film also stars Christian Vasquez as the Spanish superior of the San Diego missions.

The full-length trailer of the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival entry, "Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir," was released early this week, showing glimpses of the life and martyrdom of the Filipino saint.
