PROFILE: Miss Universe Canada 2013 - Riza Santos

WRONG WINNER: Miss Universe Canada dethrones Denise Garrido, declares Filipino Riza Santos winner

Just barely two days after she was crowned Miss Universe Canada 2013, Denise Garrido has been demoted to 3rd runner-up position due to a tabulation error.

About 24 hours later, organizers realized a whopper of a mistake and she was dethroned.

Riza Santos,  26, who was 1st runner-up, has now been declared as the true winner. Beauties of Canada, the organizer of the pageant, has released the following statement:

MISS UNIVERSE CANADA 2013 FINAL RESULTS

The 2013 Miss Universe Canada pageant took place on Saturday, May 25 at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto.  During the validation of the computerized scoring results (which occurs the following day), a typo was discovered in the top 5 entries, which significantly impacted the final results of the competition.  This is the first instance of this type of error in the 11 years that Beauties of Canada (BOC) has produced the Miss Universe Canada pageant.
This is an unfortunate circumstance where a human error was made, and in such a situation, as difficult as it is, it is only right to correct the error.  Therefore, the official results of Miss Universe Canada 2013 are as follows:
Miss Universe Canada 2013 Riza Santos (Calgary, AB)
1st runner-up Siera Bearchell (Moose Jaw, SK)
2nd runner-up Diana Martin (Mississauga, ON)
3rd runner-up Denise Garrido (Bradford, ON)
4th runner-up Michelle McKay (Sarnia, ON)
We would like to offer our sincere apology to Denise Garrido for this human error discovered while validating the results. Miss Garrido’s example and grace represents all we look for at Miss Universe Canada. We have no doubt she will continue to succeed in her endeavours and we wish her well. We truly hope she remains a strong part of the Miss Universe Canada Organization.
Beauties of Canada congratulates Riza Santos as the winner of Miss Universe Canada 2013 competition, and looks forward to working with her as she prepares to represent our country at Miss Universe 2013. BOC would also like to congratulate all the runners-up on their proper placements at the pageant, as well as the other 52 extraordinary young women who competed for the title in Toronto.
Santos had already flown back to Alberta and wasn't notified that she was, in fact, the winner until late Monday.
Santos parents are from Bataan and Bulacan in the Philippines but she was raised in Canada. She has studied mechanical engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering and previously spent two years enrolled in the Canadian Forces Army Reserve with 15 Field Ambulance. She completed her basic military qualification and solider qualification.

She competed and won Miss Earth Canada 2006 and Miss World Canada 2011.

The beauty queen competed in the Miss Earth 2006 pageant, in which she was given the Miss Photogenic and Miss Fontana awards. She also competed in Miss World 2011 contest, where she placed 29th out of 113 contestants.

Santos has also worked as an actress on Philippine television shows and movies, and has volunteered for various organizations, including as a track and field coach for Special Olympics Canada.

During her participation with Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Edition 2, she played for Bantay Bata, ABS-CBN Foundation's charitable institution. On Day 84, she was proclaimed the second place winner of the show. In 2008 and 2009, she hosted the Asian Poker Tour. She also landed at number 18 in the FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in 2008.

After a whirlwind week, Riza Santos was officially crowned Miss Universe Canada in Calgary on Sunday.

The actress, good will ambassador, model and former soldier was presented with the crown at a ceremony at the Osteria de Medici restaurant in downtown Calgary.

“It’s interesting the way everything transpired. I guess everything happens for a reason and to have the crowning here in Calgary in front of friends and family means just as much to me, it’s not necessarily bittersweet.”

As part of her Miss Universe Canada duties, Santos will begin preparation for the Miss Universe 2013 pageant in Toronto in December. She will also model at Philippines Fashion Week and will take part in the Miss Universe Canada Goodwill tour to Nicaragua to work with SOS Children's Villages and Operation Smile.
