Smoke seen coming out of Mayon Volcano

Smoke was seen coming out of Mayon Volcano on Tuesday morning, an official said.

A 25-second explosion was reported at around 8am, ABS-CBN reported, sending a huge plume of smoke between 2-3 kilometers up the air.

The alert level for the volcano is still at "zero," Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said in an interview on ANC. No magma activity was recorded, he said, and was instead caused by steam from the crater.

Local media reports said 3 mountain climbers died after being hit by rocks. Four other mountaineers are trapped in the mountainside, Albay Governor Joey Salceda said on ANC.

Salceda, on his Facebook page, also said that the provincial government is already organizing a rescue mission for the mountaineers still on the slopes of Mayon.

The Albay provincial government also issued an advisory for the area around the volcano, advising that even if the volcano is under "Alert 0," "extra care and caution" should be exercised within the 6-km permanent danger zone around Mayon.
