EDC to start $300-M wind power project in Ilocos Norte

Lopez-led Energy Development Corporation (EDC) has gotten the green light from the Department of Energy (DOE) to push through with the development of its $300-million wind project in Burgos, Ilocos Norte.

The DOE granted the Certificate of Confirmation of Commerciality for the 87-MW Burgos Wind Project, which aims to become the largest wind farm in the Philippines. This is the first to be issued by the DOE for a wind project.

"When it is completed in 2014, the Burgos Wind Project will be the largest wind farm in the Philippines."

With the certification, the Burgos Wind Project's wind energy service contract is converted from exploration/ pre-development stage to the development/ commercial stage.

EDC broke ground for the project last April 19 after signing an EPC contract with Vestas, the world's leading wind turbine manufacturer, on March 1.  The Burgos Wind Project will utilize the proven Vestas V90-3.0 MW wind turbines.

Aside from the wind farm, the project also involves  putting up a transmission line connecting the farm to the Laoag substation of the National Grid Corp.; and creating a substation adjacent to the farm and interconnected to the Laoag substation.

The Burgos wind project is expected to generate approximately 233 GWh annually, enough to supply the energy demand for over a million households.
