PART 2: The Youngest: Greco Antonious Beda Banta Belgica
Part 3
Part 4

Taking pride on being the youngest among the 33 senatorial candidates this upcoming election is Greco Antonious Beda Banta Belgica, a Filipino businessman and pastor of the Lord’s Vineyard Church, under the Democratic Party of the Philippines and Partido ng Manggagawa at Magsasaka.

Belgica, born on March 27, 1978, previously served as a City Councilor of the Sixth District of Manila from 2004 to 2007 and Chairman of the Committee on Police, Fire and Public Safety and the Committee on Economic Development. He had his post-graduate studies in International Trade and Commerce, University of California, Berkeley.

Belgica’s road into the 2013 senatorial elections came after his painful loss from reelection as City Councilor in 2007 and reestablishing himself as a pastor in the Christian ministry that is founded by his father, Grepor “Butch” Belgica, a murder convict turned evangelist. He gave in to his friends and supporters prodding to run for a seat after his experience as an elder in the Christian community. “Being a minister, I realized that the life of people in power was very different from the life of ordinary citizens. Those in power do not obey the law. We also have laws that are not consistent with the law of God,” he said.

A flat tax system for the Philippines is Belgica’s campaign platform. He wants to replace our current progressive tax system with a flat-rate tax. “One of my advocacies is to abolish all current taxes, including the e-VAT (expanded value-added tax) and the RPT (real property tax), and replace them with a 10-percent flat-rate system,” Belgica said. According to him, flat tax will entail a higher income opportunities and less government deduction.

Among his other advocacies include a proper and faithful implementation of the spirit of RA 9165, to make all natural and financial resources available and accessible to our countrymen, and a government that is kind to the church and who shall respect and safe guard the God given autonomy of the Church and of the Family.

Young, promising and religious.
