Senatorial Wannabes: The OTHERS (Part 1)

Posted on 4/12/13 7:34 PM

Popularity is the name of the game in Philippine politics where candidates with famous last names and prominent relatives are almost sure of snagging the post. If one would observe, most political ads compose of a father’s supposed legacy, a husband’s influence, a cousin’s power or a prevalent party list. For a candidate with none of those connections, he would have to rely on a catchy ad (which would cost a lot of commas) of his own but if budget would not allow, then he would have to move heaven and earth to win the race.

With the 2013 May Elections fast approaching, allow me to take you to the path of the “unknown” senator- wannabes of our country. Bear in mind that this is not a free-ad for them but a piece of help for all voters alike. (note:  featured senatoriables will be those deemed unknown by the writer)

PART 1: Matalinong Alternatibo para sa Senado: Atty. Samson Alcantara

Matalinong Alternatibo para sa Senado is how Atty. Samson Alcantara, a senatorial candidate from the Social Justice Society (SJS), brands himself to the public.

Born on May 14, 1935 Alcantara hails from the province of Abra and a third placer in the 1965 Philippine Bar Examination. He finished his law studies at Manuel L. Quezon University School of Law 1957 and started his profession as a law professor in 1967, specializing in political law and labor law. At present, he serves as a law professor in different universities such as University of Sto. Tomas, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, University of the East, New Era University and including his alma mater, Manuel L. Quezon University.

Alcantara is the National President of the Social Justice Society, a group that pushed for the relocation of oil depots from Pandacan.  He is also the founding Chairman and President of the ABAKADA-GURO partylist (formerly Advocates and Adherents of Social Justice for School Teachers and Allied Workers), a partylist group representing teachers which is also set to participate in the upcoming elections.

His achievements have earned Alcantara several recognitions, including the Outstanding Abrenian Award given by the provincial government of Abra in 2005 and an Outstanding Alumni Award from the MLQU in 2009.

Among the controversies that had him headlined was the petition to the Supreme Court to remove Jonathan Dela Cruz, the representative of ABAKADA-GURO partylist, in 2010. But the said petition was junked in 2012. Another was the petition to stop the airing television commercials of five government officials, stating that these officials acted against ethical standards expected from elected officials and violated "the letter and spirit" of the 1987 Constitution.

The abolition of political dynasties is the centrepiece of Alcantara’s platform. “The Constitution mandates equitable distribution not only of wealth but of political power. Unequal distribution of wealth will continue as long as political power is concentrated in the hands of a few,” he once said in an interview. His other platforms include quality education, increase of employment opportunities, development of social values, protection of public officers against discriminatory practices, fair and speedy administration of justice, development of natural resources, elimination of oppressive impositions and environment-related hazards and assistance to entrepreneurs.

A new face with an unfamiliar last name that belongs to the ‘other’ partylist, but likewise promises a better Philippines.
