PART 4: JC De los Reyes: Wishing for a 'Catholic vote'

“The only way we could win is if there would be a Catholic vote,” said JC De los Reyes as he recognizes the power of the Christian community in the upcoming elections this May.

John Carlos “JC” De los Reyes, one of the 33 senatorial candidates under the Ang Kapatiran political party, was born on February 14, 1970 in Mandaluyong and a graduate of Business Administration in Theology at the Franciscan University in Steubenville. His work experience includes teaching Theology at University of Asia and the Pacific in 1993 before he ran as City Councilor in Olongapo in 1995 and 2007.

In 2010, De los Reyes ran for Presidency under the same party list together with his vice presidential running mate Dominador Chipeco Jr. and seven senatorial bets, however, he conceded in the said race and supported Benigno Aquino III instead. Nonetheless, his withdrawal didn’t stop him from pushing the platforms of his party list which include abolishing graft and corruption and political dynasties.
The boldest statement he has made for good governance is the filing of numerous cases before the Ombudsman against high ranking government officials where he himself is complainant. This is in line with his political policy of alleviating the people’s suffering by addressing the problem of expensive and increasing costs of basic needs like water, electricity, medicines, health care, etc., and insuring that these basic services are kept free and far from graft and corruption.

De los Reyes said that his passion and vision is to unceasingly work to fight and defeat massive, enslaving poverty, a mission to be accomplished not only in Olongapo but in the whole country. And though the CBCP refuses to endorse any political candidate in order to give freedom to its community, De los Reyes remains hopeful saying “It’s like I'm a prostitute that's just going through the motion because it’s really hard when you're fighting against giants. But I’m the only candidate who is willing to lose just so the country would see we need a change.”

A candidate who appears to have that unwavering faith in people’s hunger for change.
