Miss Universe 2011

"I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point." - Oprah Winfrey
Ms. Philippines, Shamcey Supsup trends worldwide

Ms. Angola is Ms. Universe 2011

Shamcey Supsup settles for 3rd Runner-up
Ms. Universe bet Shamcey Supsup of the Philippines has made the final 10 of this years’ Ms. Universe Pageant in Brazil. Garnering the second highest score in the swimsuit competition, Shamcey initially made the top 16, having been picked 15th overall.
Shamcey is joined by 9 other beauties that include Laury Thilleman (France), Leila Lopes (Angola), Zilin Luo (China), Sherri-Lee Biggs (Australia), Priscila Machado (Brazil), Olesya Stefanko (Ukraine), Sheldry Saez (Panama), Johanna Solano (Costa Rica), and Laura Goncalves (Portugal).

Rounding up the top 16 Ms. Universe 2011 contestants were Aferdita Dreshaj (Kosovo), Catalina Robayo (Colombia), Viviana Ortiz (Puerto Rico), Kelly Weekers (Netherlands), Alyssa Campanella (USA) and Vanessa Goncalves (Venezuela).
Shamcey Supsup has been voted into final 5 along with Ms. Ukraine, Ms. China, Ms. Angola and Ms. Brazil.
Interview portion: Shamcey was asked if she would change her religion in case it was called for in relation to the man he loved. Shamcey replied by saying she will not because God made her into what she is today.

Final Update: Ms. Angola (Leila Lopes) has been crowned Miss Universe 2011, besting out four other beauties that included the Philippines’ own Shamcey Supsup who settled for third runner-up.
Ms. China (Zilin Luo) took the fourth runner-up honors, followed by Supsup for third. Ms. Brazil (Priscila Machado) took 2nd runner-up while Ms. Ukraine (Olesya Stefanko) was the 1st runner-up.

Shamcey Supsup still a winner for Pinoys

Shamcey Supsup may not have bagged the elusive international beauty title but to a lot of Filipinos, she still is a true winner.

Out of 89 candidates, Supsup, 25, placed third runner-up in the Miss Universe 2011 pageant held in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Malacanang praised Supsup for her "humility, intellect, and grace" during the pageant, noting that she "embodied the spirit of the true Filipina."

"In our eyes, that is the true victory today—that the world stood witness to and found an appreciation for the ideals, values, and beauty that has long characterized our nation," presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.

"May this triumph serve as a way for other nations to come to appreciate not just the beauty of our people, but that of our country. On behalf of the Filipino people, we are proud of you [Shamcey]; and we see even greater things ahead for you," Lacierda added.
Shamcey is the lone candidate who did not seek the help of an interpreter during the final Q& A.

Supsup's win is a huge achievement on top of her previous wins, including topping the 2010 Architect Licensure Examination and graduating magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines.

In Twitter’s world-wide Trending Topic, "Ms. Philippines" was in 9th place, while in the Philippines' trending list, "Go Philippines" was top two.

Supsup, who was described as having a "mega-watt smile" during the pageant also placed second in the competition's online ranking for the evening gown.

In a Yahoo! Philippines OMG! poll, majority of the respondents believed Supsup would make it.

At least 58 percent of the respondents believed Supsup had a huge chance at getting the crown, 27 percent voted that she would be among the Top 5, while five percent said she would be in the Top 10. A mere five percent said she wouldn’t get into the final stages.

On the Yahoo! Philippines Facebook fanpage,  Ed Hagamann said: "I thought Shamcey did her country good. she represented Filipinos very well and I, for one, am proud of her."

Meyett Dollosa added: "At least she did her best for the country and for family! Congrats, Shamcey :)"

Beauty experts rate Miss Philippines a favourite

Miss Philippines-Universe Shamcey Supsup was among the favourites to win the Miss Universe title this year, according to a former winner and a former national pageant director who has produced formidable candidates.

Canadian beauty Natalie Glebova, who was proclaimed Miss Universe 2005 in Thailand, included Supsup among her first five picks for the title after viewing the pageant's preliminary presentation show on Thursday (Friday in Manila).

The 89 candidates introduced themselves and paraded in identical swimsuits and in different evening gowns during the event, considered a defining moment in selecting the semifinalists who will contest the coronation on Tuesday.

Best 3

Frenchwoman Ines Ligron, the former national pageant director of Japan who trained Malaysian representative Deborah Henry, included Supsup on her "best three" list, along with her ward and Australian candidate Sherri-lee Biggs.

Glebova also named Ukraine's Olesia Stefanko, Luo Zilin of China, Aruban Gillian Berry and Adriana Dorn from Nicaragua among the five delegates who caught her attention and whom she predicted would likely land in the semifinals. She posted her list on her Facebook fanpage (www.facebook.com/MissUniverse2005).

In her blog (inesligron.com/blogroll), Ligron considered Supsup, Biggs and Henry as having the "full package" and cited the three for their "amazing body, great catwalk, fresh face, charismatic aura, stunning dresses", and for being naturally beautiful and elegant on stage.

Validated

Ligron's expertise in beauty pageants was validated when she handled the Miss Universe Japan pageant from 1998. Under her watch, Japan produced semifinalist Hiroko Mima (2008) fourth runner-up Miyako Miyazaki (2003), first runner-up Kurara Chibana (2006) and 2007 Miss Universe Riyo Mori.

Ligron also named among her final five choices for the title this year Mexico's Karin Ontiveros and Sheldry Saez from Panama. She also called attention to Luo, Stefanko, her compatriot Laury Thilleman, and the contestants from Angola, Argentina, Greece, the Netherlands and Venezuela.

Only Supsup's name was in both Glebova's and Ligron's top favourites for the crown. The other candidates included in both experts' expanded lists were the representatives from Australia, Mexico, Malaysia, China, Greece, Ukraine and Venezuela.

Even before the preliminary presentation, Supsup had already created a splash in Sao Paulo when she was chosen to speak in one of the pageant's official events.

In "Operation Smile", Supsup joined reigning Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete, Luo, Venezuela's Vanessa Goncalvez and host delegate Priscila Machado in meeting members of the media. She was reported to have dominated the interview and showed an excellent grasp of the project's goal of putting smiles on children born with cleft palates.

Architect

The 25-year-old Supsup is from General Santos City. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines and topped the architecture licensure exams in 2010. She had no modeling experiences before joining the Binibining Pilipinas pageant, her first beauty contest.

But after months of training, Supsup developed into a formidable international contestant. Her predecessor, 2010 Miss Universe fourth runner-up Venus Raj, noted Supsup's "dramatic" improvement during the course of her preparations.

Supsup also underwent a week-long training in Bogota, Colombia, before flying to Sao Paulo.

Her all

At Supsup's send-off last month, Raj declared: "Once she is given a task, she really does her best. Whether it is for the family, business or school, Shamcey gives her all. And for Miss Universe, she has no other choice but to give her best, and to be the best."

Supsup's batchmates in this year's Binibining Pilipinas pageant were also impressed with her presentation last Thursday.

"Her performance was breathtaking. It's just her second pageant, but who would have ever guessed that? I have high hopes for her. I know she will deliver," second runner-up Mary Jean Lastimosa told the Inquirer in a phone interview.

"All the training and hard work that we shared together paid off. I am praying for her. The Filipinos are praying for her. She's been like a sister to me. I will always be willing to help her," added Lastimosa.

Lea Salonga asked Miss Angola final question

Tony Award winner Lea Salonga is now part of Miss Universe history after asking the final question that gave Miss Angola Leila Lopes the victory in the 2011 competition.
Salonga was one of the judges of the 60th Miss Universe held at Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Tuesday night (Manila time).

Salonga's name was picked to ask Lopes her final question. Her question was: "Good evening. If you could change one of your personal characteristics, which one would it be and why?"

Lopes replied: "Thank God, I’m very well satisfied with the way God created me and I would not change a thing. I consider myself a woman with inner beauty. I have my principles. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I plan to follow this through the rest of my life."

In an interview before going to Brazil, Salonga said she was overwhelmed at being chosen as one of the judges in this year’s Miss Universe pageant.

She said that even the 2011 Bb. Pilipinas-Unviverse Shamcey Supsup will do her best, Salonga vowed to be fair in giving scores to all the candidates.

The country's official candidate, reigning Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2011 Shamcey Supsup was announced as the 3rd placer in the world's most prestigeous beauty pageant.
