World's tallest Jose Rizal monument inaugurated

In line with the country’s celebration of Dr. Jose Rizal’s 150th birthday, the tallest monument of the Philippine national hero was inaugurated in Calamba City, Laguna on Sunday.

Calamba City Public Information Officer Peter Capitan said the tallest monument was built at the 6.9-hectare government property in front of the new Calamba City Hall on Real-Bacnotan Road in Barangay Real.

The monument is 22 feet tall, with the number symbolizing the 22 languages and dialects used by Rizal. Among these are Arabic, Catalan, Chinese, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Malay, Portuguese, Russian, Sanskrit and Spanish.

Visitors have to walk along a 15-step stairway before reaching the monument. Each step symbolizes ten decades of Rizal.
